OpenGL 2.0 Support

Okay, so fair warning, I have very little overall experience with in-depth technical stuff. The most technical stuff I've done thus far is installing and setting up a modem and router and installing an operating system. However, I was doing some research into Open GL support earlier today and I found out that on Windows specifically programs that use OpenGL like Blender for example come with the necessary drivers and libraries included in the software.

I don't know how many current users of the software are on Windows and if an inability to open Mosketch because of OpenGL 2.0 is a problem that only affects me. However, even if it is I think it would be to Moka Studios best interests to do what other software of its type do and include the necessary stuff inside the installer package.

However, while accessibility is the core of this issue, another facet of it is the design philosophy behind the software. As far as I can tell, Mosketch is designed as a software that handles most of the more complicated stuff automatically, without the artists needing to be computer experts. To then require users to find OpenGL drivers on their own, something that isn't really feasible without extensive knowledge of where to look, seems to be in direct opposition to this idea.

So that's my recommendation for today. Have a good evening.

Blender does not come with graphics drivers - Blender comes with openGL routines that use the openGL graphics drivers that get included with your Windows 10 installed.

I am using as my everyday computer a 7 year old laptop with a Intel HD Graphics 4000, it and the Intel HD Graphics 2500 are the two oldest graphics cards out there that people needing to use openGL are likely to possible still be able to use that supports openGL 2.0. Any newer intel CPUs will support that and newer.

If you look at discreet video cards even older models than 7 years will support openGL 2.0.

So basically you just read mostly old gossip and complaints in doing your research. It's not valid conclusion for anybody that's seriously looking to do animation on a computer that is 7 years old or newer.

Yeah, this thread hasn't had my full updated situation, and honestly I kind of regret making it primarily because it's jumping the gun. Currently, I have three computers in my home that are mine, one a Zorin OS 12 laptop, one is a Windows 7 Laptop, and one is a Windows 7 Desktop. I've only tested the Windows computers but the problem on my desktop seems to be my processor, as it's a 2nd Gen Intel, way too old to support Mosketch at this current time. My Windows 7 Laptop can open the software just fine but will then immediately shut it down because it doesn't have any dedicated graphics card. So my solution at this point is to get a new computer with more recent parts and a Windows 10 installation just to be on the safe side.

That said, I do appreciate your input Andy, it definitely gives me a bit more insight. It just, unfortunately, doesn't change the fact that I can't use the software with my current setups.

Hi,

thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback. If anybody else has such issues, that would be indeed nice to hear from them too. We had some reports directly by emails indeed too.

I agree that the main goal is to make 3D animation much easier thanks to Mosketch. And for that purpose, compatibility should be improved to make sure it can run on as many computers as possible. However, it still remains a 3D software using OpenGL, and as such, it would require updated graphics card drivers. Finally, having a dedicated graphics card would also be important.

However, Mosketch has been tested with success on low-end devices such as a Surface Pro 3 with an integrated intel GPU (https://vimeo.com/145794272) in the past. So we should be able to make it compatible with your computer as well in the future. And we will work in that direction.

Thanks again for your helpful feedback and sorry for the inconvenience.

Best.

Hi Dominik, Hi Andy,

sorry to hear that you are having trouble using Mosketch on your computers. It is really hard to tell what is wrong here. Because we are testing Mosketch on computers that are using integrated GPUs and it works fine. Please try to update your GPU drivers, it should work fine. It is indeed your "responsability" to keep your drivers up to date. We cannot provide drivers for all possible GPUs indeed.

If you need further assistance, please contact us by email directly. We will try to ask for more details and maybe we could find a solution.

Sorry again for the inconvenience.

Mosketch works fine on my computer. It will work with any integrated GPU that is equivalent or better than Intel HD Graphics 2500/Intel HD Graphics 4000.
